TG Financial Aid Leadership Symposium

February 2 - 6, 2009
TG Campus, Round Rock, Texas

Announcing the 2009 TG Financial Aid Leadership Symposium, a week-long professional development workshop specifically designed to enhance the leadership skills of mid-level managers in college and university financial aid offices.

Unlike other leadership training opportunities, TG's Financial Aid Leadership Symposium applies the building blocks of leadership — vision, values, teamwork, trust, motivation, embracing change — within the context of the financial aid community.

Participants will study key leadership principles in interactive sessions and apply these concepts toward real-world financial aid office issues presented by fellow Symposium members.

Who can attend the Symposium?
The Symposium is open to mid-level student financial aid managers. Anyone interested in attending must apply, and TG will select participants to form a diverse cohort.

How much does it cost?
The fee for the Symposium is $1,000 per participant. This fee includes the full week of classes and materials, as well as hotel accommodations for four nights and all breakfast and lunch meals. Participants are responsible for all expenses related to travel to and from the training location in Round Rock, Texas.

How do I apply?
Space for the Symposium is limited to between 12 and 16 participants to create a comfortable atmosphere for small-group activities and interactive exercises.

Each applicant will be required to submit:

  • A letter stating his or her desire to participate in the program
  • Two letters of recommendation, including one from the school's Director of Financial Aid; and
  • A current challenge/issue that the school is facing that can be used in the program as a sample scenario.

What topics does the Symposium address?
Each selected cohort member will be required to complete a leadership assessment instrument prior to the start of the Symposium. The report of this assessment will provide each participant with a clear understanding of his or her current leadership strengths and weaknesses as perceived by the participant's peers, supervisor, and direct reports.

Instructional modules during the Symposium will focus on enhancing the following leadership traits:

  • Communication
  • Building a shared vision
  • Trust
  • Embracing change
  • Motivation
  • Performance management and coaching
  • Presentation skills
  • Customer service
  • Ethics and accountability in a financial aid office
  • Goal setting and action planning
  • Teamwork and synergy

What is the training like?
Instructional techniques will include interactive modules, small-group projects and exercises, individual presentations, mentoring, roundtable discussions, access to experts in financial aid office operations, and a TG tour.

How will the Symposium benefit me?
Participants will receive a certificate of completion, renewed skills, and access to a network of leading financial aid professionals with whom they can share best practices throughout the balance of their careers.
