The Higher Education Act (the Act) is the federal law that governs the administration of federal higher education programs. The Act was originally passed in 1965 and signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson. However, to encourage amendments, growth, and change, it must be passed again, or reauthorized, by Congress approximately every five years.
The tenth reauthorization of the Act was passed on July 31, 2008, and signed into law by President Bush on August 14, 2008. For information on the reauthorization, see TG's Higher Education Act Legislation pages.
Title IV of the Act covers the administration of the federal student financial aid programs. The complete text of Title IV is available by clicking on the link to the right. The portions of the law pertaining to the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP) are located primarily in Parts B and G.
